This month is National Adoption Month. It means something special to me because adoption is a huge part of our family. With Thanksgiving this month, I had planned to focus on kitchens and dining rooms, but I think it’s important to recognize the main reason we want beautifully designed spaces: family.
As we gather around the table during the holiday season, it’s easy to reflect on the importance of our shared experiences. For families like mine, where adoption plays a significant role, the kitchen and dining room become more than just functional spaces; they transform into the heart of our home. These areas are where we create memories, share stories, and nurture the bonds that tie us together.
The Kitchen: A Hub of Connection

The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home, and for good reason. It’s where meals are prepared, snacks are shared, and laughter fills the air. When designing a kitchen, consider how the layout can facilitate interaction. An open concept, allowing for easy conversation, so everyone can feel included, whether they’re cooking, snacking, or simply enjoying each other’s company.
Incorporating an island or a breakfast bar can create a natural gathering spot. Imagine kids doing homework while you prepare dinner, or friends chatting over coffee as the aroma of freshly baked cookies wafts through the air. The kitchen should invite connection and engagement, making everyone feel welcome.
The Dining Room: Creating Lasting Memories

The dining room is where we come together for special occasions and everyday meals alike. As we sit around the table, sharing a meal, we share our lives. For families formed through adoption, these moments can be particularly poignant, as they symbolize unity and love.
When designing your dining room, think about the atmosphere you want to create. A large, inviting table encourages long, leisurely meals filled with conversation. Consider adding personal touches, like family photos or a centerpiece that reflects your family's journey. Lighting also plays a key role—soft, warm lighting can create a cozy atmosphere that invites relaxation and connection.
Honoring Our Unique Journeys

In addition to functionality and aesthetics, it’s essential to honor the unique stories that bring us together. Incorporating elements that celebrate your family's journey can make your spaces even more special. This could be a dedicated wall for family photos, a board for sharing memories, or even artwork created by family members.
As we celebrate National Adoption Month, let’s also celebrate the love that makes our families unique. Our kitchens and dining rooms should reflect the warmth and joy of these connections, creating a welcoming space for everyone to come together.
A Space for Love and Togetherness

This Thanksgiving, as we gather with loved ones, let’s remember the importance of our spaces and the stories they hold. Our beautifully designed kitchens and dining rooms are more than just aesthetics; they are the backdrop for the love, laughter, and connections that define our families.
In a month dedicated to adoption, let’s embrace our unique journeys and create environments that foster togetherness, making every meal a celebration of love and family.
Happy National Adoption Month!
